Worst Case Scenario Survival Kit For Business Travelers
Something is terribly wrong. You had a full set of luggage when you checked in for your flight. Now all you have is the mystery novel and some odds and ends you thought you’d take to make the flight a more interesting. But an eerie sensation comes on in a wave. Then it’s that hysterical panic of knowing that the bags with all your things, clothing and necessities, have been lost.
In the best case scenario, you’ll at least have a toothbrush, toothpaste, and maybe some mouthwash with you in your carryon. You may even have shaving cream and a razor because you’ve thought of everything! But your clothes—all of them—are gone. Your slacks and underwear and socks have vanished like a fog.
Now what to do?
The thing you need to remember above all else is that nothing is ever easy and often things go wrong. Now that real question comes: has anything ever gone completely smoothly any time you have ever taken a flight anywhere? The fact is, complications will arise on just about every trip you take, and you’ll wish you had a way to do things like shave or change your underwear.
Take a moment to decide what you will really need. Not want; think about things that will be a necessity to have once you reach your destination. Will you need that book? Will you need that TIME magazine?
Take the items you must have in your carryon- your survival kit:
• Personal hygiene toiletries
When was the last time you made money and won over new clients with body odor? In your survival kit pack your mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste, a razor, and deodorant. That is your first concern; personal hygiene. Also, having hand sanitizer is essential to keep yourself free of diseases and ailments associated with foreign travel.
• Changes of clothes
Wear a pair of casual slacks and a polo shirt on your flight, packing in your survival kit one dress shirt, one tie, one pair of nice slacks, a pair or two of socks and several changes of underwear. Personal hygiene is just the beginning. A close second is not looking wrinkled and disheveled - like you just fell out of a dumpster.
• Traveler’s Checks, credit cards, and passport
Being able to buy things like food and water is a good thing. But losing all your money and travel documents with your luggage will spell disaster. Like jumping into a fire covered in gasoline, what can you expect to experience going into a foreign country with no money or passport?
Other things that will come in extremely handy when lost luggage or a disaster strikes are:
• Granola or Power bars
• Rubber bands
• Safety pins
• A few days worth of any prescribed medication
• Band-aids
• Water
• Small flashlight
It may seem like that’s an awful lot of stuff to fit into a carryon. Give it a try, it is possible. Whittle down everything you take on a business trip—the essentials—and if you can’t fit it into a regular-sized carryon then you’re doing something wrong.
Business is a gamble by nature. You rely on the volatility of a fickle market and play the financial odds hoping to make a big win. Business travel shouldn’t tip the scales against your coming out ahead on your international strategy. By taking the precaution of expecting to lose everything when you get to your destination, two things will happen.
First, you’ll be prepared. You’ll have tomorrow’s clothes for that important business meeting at 8:00 in the morning. You can clean yourself, so you won’t make a more odorous introduction than you planned. Secondly, you’ll also have money, food, and the medication you need in order to live. You’re set.
But when you don’t expect something to go wrong, and it does, you’ll be prepared. The silver lining, however, is that when the airline botches up your business plans again, at least your endeavors for success won’t be sabotaged by lost luggage.
