Tips on Packing A Suitcase - The Roly-Poly Method

Packing a suitcase properly has thwarted many a traveller! But it's not too tricky if you know the tips. The goal, as always, is to maximise space while avoiding a case full of wrinkled and unwearable clothing. Luckily there are several ways to achieve this. This article looks at the Roly-Poly Method.

Figure out ahead of time how much and what kind of clothing you'll need for your trip. Clearly a week-long city break requires more than a weekend to the country. Ask yourself: What does the weather report say? Will you have laundry facilities where you're going? It goes without saying that you won't need hiking boots for a beach holiday or a suit at a camp site!
Pack only small toiletries if possible. Make sure to seal them in plastic bags to protect against spillage. If you really need bigger bottles or packages, at least make sure they are a practical shape – flat instead of round or uneven. Choose bottles with screw-on or secure caps that won't suddenly burst open.
Before you begin packing, make a list. Then cut down this list by about 10%. It helps if you figure out your outfits beforehand, so you know if all the items are really necessary. Once you're made sure you're not taking too much unnecessary stuff, you're ready to pack.

The Roly-Poly Method:
- Lay each item out on the floor and partially fold it – fold trousers in half and tuck shirt arms neatly away.
- Starting from the bottom of the article of clothing, roll tightly until you reach the end. You should end up with a neat roll, which is then easily fit into the suitcase.

- If you have any 'unrollable' or very delicate items, you can either place them flat at the very top of the case or carry them in a separate garment bag. This is more unwieldy, but it depends on your personal tastes.
- Heavier items like jeans and jackets should go at the bottom of the case, wherease lighter articles like shirts should go on top.

- To save space, roll up underwear and socks and put them inside your shoes! Fit the shoes at the bottom or around the sides of the case where there is space.
- Leave room in the center of the suitcase for your toiletries and other items that could easily get damaged or knocked, like hair straighteners. A place in between some of your clothing cylinders should prevent spills and squashes.
